Media is Everywhere

When I hear the word media, I initially think of social media. Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. As I sat in my first Media, Family, and Development class, I realized media is much more than that. It is more than movies and tv shows. It is more than music. Today, everything we do revolves around media. I am going to walk through a typical day to see how much media I actually use.

6:30am: My alarm on my phone begins to ring. I hit the snooze button. Before I am even fully awake, I am using media.
6:45am: I check my phone to see what time it is.
7:00am: I scroll through Pinterest to get an outfit idea. I get sidetracked and end up on Instagram. 7:15am: Oops... I still have to pack my lunch and eat breakfast. Check my phone again to see what time it is.
7:38am: On the shuttle to go to school. I scroll through apps, play my husband in anagrams on imessage, and listen to the music playing while we ride to campus.
8:00am: I check my email to confirm that my class' location was changed.
8:30am: In empty classroom. The class starts at 8:45, so I wonder whether the location actually wasn't changed. I check my email again to make sure it said the room I was in. I Text a friend in the class to see if she got the email too.
8:45am: Class begins. The lesson is projected on a powerpoint.

I would continue, but I think I got the point across. Within the first 2 hours of my day, I have already interacted with so much media. The crazy part is that this was completely normal! Media is such an ingrained part of my life. Some by choice, some by chance. I hope the next couple weeks to really focus and think about how much media I am interacting with.

  2. This is so true. I think media is so important, but I wonder what more I can do to control my media usage. That's why I'm excited about this class. I think it will bring me some great perspective.
